In a Saudi summer, the sealed cargo box of a regular truck sitting under the sun gets hotter than the air outside. And a shipment that needs refrigeration simply can't handle that, even on a short trip. That's why refrigerated shipping within Saudi Arabia has become a necessity for many sectors, not just pharmaceuticals.

But there's a big difference between a truck with air conditioning and refrigerated shipping you can actually prove kept the temperature in range from the first minute to the last. In this guide we explain when you need refrigerated shipping, what to ask any provider before you hand over your shipment, and what we've learned from refrigerated trips we've run for government entities and companies.

Which products need refrigerated shipping?

The simple rule: any product with a storage temperature printed on its packaging needs that same temperature during transport. The most common ones:

  • Pharmaceuticals and medical supplies: insulin, vaccines, and many biologic medicines.
  • Fresh food and dairy: and any food product with a short shelf life.
  • Dates: especially rutab and premium dates, whose quality is affected by heat and humidity.
  • Sensitive cosmetics: some creams and serums change composition in the heat.
  • Chocolate and confectionery: they melt or lose their shape even if they don't spoil.

Chilled or frozen? Know your range before you book

Not all refrigerated shipping is the same. Before you contact any provider, determine the range your product needs:

| Type | Typical range | Examples | | --- | --- | --- | | Chilled | 2 to 8 degrees | Pharmaceuticals, vaccines, dairy | | Frozen | Below zero, depending on the product | Meat and frozen foods, some biologic products | | Temperature controlled | Up to roughly 25 degrees | Dates, chocolate, many cosmetic products |

The first reference is always the storage instructions printed on the product or specified by the manufacturer.

A refrigerated truck on its own isn't enough

The most common mistake we see is a company relying on the fact that "the vehicle is refrigerated" and leaving it at that. The problem is that the temperature can spike for a few minutes, for example when the door is opened repeatedly during distribution, or when the truck is parked under the sun at the loading dock, and nobody knows about it.

Proper refrigerated shipping combines 3 things:

  1. A vehicle suited to the type of load: a refrigerated dyna truck for medium volumes and distribution, and a refrigerated trailer for large volumes between cities.
  2. Temperature logging for the entire trip: a report showing the temperature from loading to delivery, sent to you with the shipment.
  3. Monitoring en route: so any issue is caught and solved before the goods are damaged, not after they arrive.

6 questions to ask any refrigerated shipping provider before you sign

  1. What types of vehicles do you have, and do they suit my shipment volume?
  2. Is there a temperature report for every trip, and can I see it?
  3. Are your drivers trained in refrigerated transport? Handling a refrigerated load is different, from how fast it's loaded to how the door is opened.
  4. Can I track the shipment en route?
  5. What happens if the temperature rises mid-route? Ask for the procedure in detail.
  6. Do you have refrigerated storage if I need to store between trips?

If the provider doesn't have a clear answer to any one of these, take it as a signal.

From trips we've run

Here are 3 refrigerated transport projects BaridX has delivered, each with a different lesson:

Pharmaceuticals for branches of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. We transported medicines and medical supplies to the Ministry's branches across different regions of the Kingdom, using refrigerated dyna trucks driven by drivers specialised in medical shipments. The shipments were documented on video with cameras all the way to arrival, and each trip came with a temperature measurement report. The lesson: government entities don't just ask for the shipment to arrive, they ask for proof of how it arrived.

Dates for the National Center for Palms and Dates. We moved dates from the Center to date factories, government entities, charities and orphanages, using refrigerated trailers and dyna trucks. Each trip came with a report containing the refrigeration system data and the vehicle's temperature readings. The lesson: the vehicle type is determined by the destination. Trailers for large volumes, dyna trucks for distribution across multiple recipients.

Cosmetics for Cosmina. We handle the refrigerated transport of cosmetic products and tools, their storage, and then delivery to the online stores that sell them, such as Amazon, Niceone and Noon. The lesson: refrigerated shipping isn't a single trip. When there's storage between trips, the temperature has to stay in range in the warehouse too.

Common mistakes that ruin a refrigerated shipment

  • Loading goods into a truck whose temperature hasn't yet come down to the required range.
  • Leaving the shipment on an exposed dock during loading or delivery.
  • Stacking cartons in a way that blocks cold air from reaching the whole load.
  • Opening the door repeatedly on a multi-stop distribution route.
  • Not agreeing on a delivery appointment in advance, leaving the shipment waiting at the recipient.
